Some of the most-loved companions don't stay perfectly fluffy forever.
After countless cuddles, bedtime stories, holidays and everyday adventures, it's only natural for a favourite soft toy to look a little different from the day they first arrived.
The good news? A little care can often help them feel soft and cosy again, ready for many more adventures together.
Why do plush toys lose their fluff?
A well-loved companion spends a lot of time being hugged, carried and tucked under little arms.
Over time, those everyday moments naturally flatten the plush fibres and gently compress the filling. Washing without the right care can also leave fabrics looking a little tired.
It's all part of a toy that's been truly loved and in many cases, it's easy to freshen them up again.
Simple ways to bring back the fluff
A gentle tumble
If the care label says it's suitable, a short tumble dry on a low heat setting can help restore softness.
Adding a couple of clean dryer balls or tennis balls helps gently lift the filling as the toy tumbles, bringing back some of its shape and bounce.
Check after 15-20 minutes and repeat if needed, always using the lowest recommended heat setting.
A gentle brush
For plush fabrics that have become a little matted, a soft-bristled brush can make a surprising difference.
Once the toy is clean and dry, gently brush in the direction of the fibres using short, light strokes. It's a simple way to help the fabric look soft and fresh again.
A little steam
For toys with longer plush fabrics, a handheld steamer on a low setting can help loosen flattened fibres before brushing.
Hold the steamer a short distance away from the fabric, then gently brush while it's still slightly warm.
Always allow the toy to dry completely before it's ready for its next cuddle.
Reshape as it dries
Sometimes all a companion needs is a little patience.
After washing, gently reshape the toy by hand while it's still damp, fluffing any areas where the filling has settled. Then leave it somewhere well ventilated to air dry naturally.
Avoid direct heat, as it can affect both the fabric and the filling.
Caring for your Dinkum companion
Dinkum Dolls and Cozy Dinkums are made for everyday adventures, and they're designed to be easy to care for, too.
For everyday washing, place your Dinkum inside a pillowcase or laundry bag and use a cool, gentle machine wash. After illness, a warm, gentle cycle with a child-safe laundry sanitiser can help give them a deeper clean.
Leave them to air dry, and they'll soon be ready for the next story.
