Halloween Costumes That Aren’t Scary: Sweet Dress-Up Ideas for Kids

Halloween without the scary stuff? Absolutely.

For lots of little ones, Halloween is much more exciting when it’s about dressing up, collecting treats and staying up past bedtime than ghosts, gore and things that go bump in the night.

And thankfully, a brilliant Halloween costume doesn’t need to be scary.

From friendly witches and black cats to fairies, favourite animals and magical creatures, here are some of our favourite non-scary Halloween costume ideas for kids — perfect for trick-or-treating, Halloween parties and a little October make-believe.

A young girl in a purple and black cat-themed costume sits in a wooden chair holding a matching plush doll, with a pumpkin bucket and a lollipop against a golden-brown curtain backdrop.

1. A Not-So-Spooky Witch

A witch is a Halloween classic, but she certainly doesn’t have to be scary.

Skip the spooky make-up and add a swishy tutu, a pointy hat, a little cape and a trick-or-treat basket instead.

Take inspiration from Mabel Moon, Holiday Hollow’s resident Dinkum Witch. On Halloween night, Mabel puts on her sparkliest tutu and cat mask so she can disguise herself as a trick-or-treater and head out to collect sweets.

A witch costume can be sparkly, colourful, mismatched and completely magical.

2. A Little Black Cat

Possibly the easiest last-minute Halloween costume of all.

Add a pair of cat ears and a tail to an all-black outfit, draw on a few whiskers and you have a Halloween costume in minutes.

For little ones who find traditional Halloween costumes overwhelming, a simple black cat costume can also feel much more like ordinary dress-up — just with a little Halloween magic added.

A child wearing a black velvet witch costume with a white Peter Pan collar holds a small plush toy with purple hair, a black hat, and a purple moon-shaped pillow.

3. The Switch Witch

For something a little different, dress up as the Switch Witch.

In Holiday Hollow, Willa the Switch Witch tiptoes from doorstep to doorstep after Halloween, swapping leftover candy for a little surprise.

All you need is a witch's hat, a favourite dress and a little bag or basket filled with pretend sweets. Extra points for tiptoeing very, very quietly. 🍬

4. A Friendly Werewolf

Werewolves don't have to be frightening either.

Think fuzzy ears, a furry tail and a little face paint rather than masks and scary teeth.

Holiday Hollow's Wesley Werewolf is proof that even a werewolf can be more sweet than spooky. He's a loveable little boy who happens to have furry ears, tiny fangs and a tendency to howl dramatically at the moon.

Perfect for kids who want to feel a little wild without being scary.

5. A Fairy

Fairies might not be traditional Halloween characters, but that's exactly why we love them.

Wings, a wand, a favourite dress and perhaps a sprinkling of biodegradable glitter make an easy non-scary Halloween costume that can be worn long after October 31.

Try a woodland fairy, moon fairy, flower fairy or even a Halloween fairy dressed in autumnal colours.

6. Their Favourite Animal

Bunny. Bear. Kitten. Puppy. Mouse. Butterfly.

If they already have a favourite animal, Halloween is the perfect excuse to become it.

Animal costumes are particularly good for toddlers because you can often create them from comfortable clothes they already own. Add ears, a tail or a little face paint and you're done.

And unlike an elaborate costume, they're usually comfortable enough for a full evening of trick-or-treating.

7. A Magical Creature

Unicorns, dragons and mermaids are made for dress-up.

Let little ones invent their own creature rather than worrying about creating a perfect costume. A pair of wings can turn pyjamas into a dragon. A homemade horn creates an instant unicorn. A sparkly skirt might belong to a mermaid who has temporarily grown legs for Halloween.

The more they invent themselves, the better.

8. Their Favourite Dinkum Friend

Halloween costumes don't have to come from a costume shop.

Let your child choose a favourite character or doll and recreate their look together using things already hiding in the dress-up box.

Then dress their Dinkum friend up too.

Matching costumes for trick-or-treating? We can't think of a better Halloween plus-one.

Making Halloween Magical Without Making It Scary

If your child doesn't enjoy scary Halloween things, there's no reason to rush them into it.

Make Halloween your own.

Carve pumpkins. Decorate the house. Make something sweet. Dress up before dinner. Go trick-or-treating while it's still light outside. Read Halloween stories in bed. Or invent a family tradition that comes back every October.

Because to a child, Halloween doesn't need to be frightening to feel exciting.

Sometimes all you need is a costume, a basket and a little bit of make-believe. 🎃✨
