There’s a new little Halloween tradition we’re rather fond of: the Boo Basket. 🎃

Part Halloween hamper, part October surprise, a Boo Basket is a basket filled with a few spooky-but-sweet treats, toys and activities for little ones to enjoy in the lead-up to Halloween.

And the best bit? There are no rules.

Make it tiny. Make it homemade. Skip the sweets completely. Add one special Halloween toy they’ll bring out every October. The magic is simply in finding a little basket waiting for them and wondering who (or what) might have left it there…

Here’s how to build your own.

What Is a Boo Basket?

A Halloween Boo Basket is a little collection of Halloween-themed surprises, usually given to children sometime in October.

Think of it as the Halloween version of an Easter basket — but instead of eggs and bunnies, you might find pumpkins, witches, cosy things, craft activities and a treat or two.

Some families leave Boo Baskets outside bedroom doors. Others surprise children with one on October 1st to mark the beginning of Halloween month.

Step 1: Start With a Basket

First things first: you need something to put all that Halloween magic in.

It doesn't need to be an actual basket. Try a little trick-or-treat bucket, mini tote bag, wooden crate or something you already have at home.

Even better? Choose something that can become their trick-or-treat basket on Halloween night and be brought back out again next year.

Step 2: Add a Halloween Friend

Every good Boo Basket needs someone to share it with.

Add a soft Halloween doll or plush toy that can become their October companion — something to take on trick-or-treating adventures, cuddle at bedtime and bring back out when Halloween rolls around again.

Pop in a favourite sweet, Halloween biscuit, popcorn or another little treat.

Or make your Boo Basket completely candy-free with stickers, hair clips, temporary tattoos, crayons, play dough or another tiny surprise instead.

If you're looking for non-candy Halloween gift ideas, the trick is not to replace a mountain of sweets with a mountain of toys. A few thoughtful little things can feel much more magical.

Step 7: Add a Little Holiday Hollow Magic

Now for the important part: how does the Boo Basket arrive?

Leave it outside their bedroom while they're asleep. Hide it somewhere in the house. Pop it on the doorstep. Or leave a trail of tiny clues leading towards it.
