How to Choose the Best First Doll for a Toddler

How to Choose the Best First Doll for a Toddler

Choosing a child’s first doll is no easy task. You’re choosing a toy that will hopefully become a companion for many years to come. They’ll join you on adventures, help your child through daunting situations like their first day of school or dentist appointments, and maybe even become part of the family.

Choosing the best first doll for a toddler matters. Here’s what to look for, and why.

What makes a good first doll for a toddler?

When choosing a doll, consider:

  • Size: A first doll should fit comfortably in small arms. Around 30 to 35 centimetres is the sweet spot for most toddlers: big enough to hold properly, little enough to carry everywhere.

  • Softness: The body should be genuinely soft. A doll’s texture is part of what makes them feel like a best friend rather than an object.

  • The face: A doll's face should be gentle and expressive without being unsettling. Embroidered features are kinder to toddlers and more durable over time than hard plastic.

  • Ease of cleaning: A doll will often go everywhere with toddlers and encounter all kinds of things. If it can’t be washed, it will eventually become something parents dread rather than love.

  • Simplicity: A doll doesn’t need ten accessories and a wardrobe on day one, so look for a simple toy that can be played with without all the bells and whistles. These can come later, as the child grows and the play becomes more complex.

When should a toddler get their first doll?

Most children are ready for a proper doll from around 18 months. Before that, for babies, a softer, floppier companion like a Dozy Dinkum or a Cozy Dinkum is often a better fit: safe from birth, and designed for cuddling rather than dressing and posing.

From 18 months onwards, a poseable, dressable doll becomes an excellent gift. Your child can sit them up, stand them with shoes on, and begin the first simple acts of caregiving that become richer and more elaborate as they grow.

By age three, most children are ready for the full doll play experience: choosing outfits, acting out stories, and treating their companion as a full character.

What to look for when gifting a first doll to a toddler

If you’re choosing a first doll as a surprise gift rather than making the decision with them, there are a few extra things to consider:

  • Gift-ready packaging: The unboxing is part of the experience, so look for packaging that feels special, with a letter or note included with the doll, or something that makes the moment feel like an occasion.

  • Name and personality: A doll that arrives with its own name is immediately a character rather than an object. The child adopts, adapts, or renames it entirely. Either way, the name is the starting point for the relationship.

  • A world they came from: The best first dolls arrive with a sense of somewhere. A story already begun, but also room for the child to continue it in any direction they choose.

Foster creativity with Dinkum World

Every character from the Dinkum World arrives with a name, a personality, and a backstory. We include these details as an invitation for owners to build upon: your own story that no one else can replicate.

Touch the rainbow over a Dinkum's heart. Close your eyes. You're already there.
