How to Wrap a Plush Toy Without a Box

How to Wrap a Plush Toy Without a Box

Soft toys are always a fan favourite at birthdays, Christmas and special occasions. But, while they’re often well-received by children, they’re also incredibly awkward to wrap for adults. The shape throws every standard wrapping technique out the window.

Don’t panic - there are several ways to get your plush present looking beautiful, and in less time than you’d expect, too.

Option 1: Tissue paper and a gift bag

The simplest solution, and often the most effective, is a large gift bag with a generous layer of tissue paper.

  • Get a gift bag large enough to properly hide the plush toy

  • Layer several pieces of tissue paper together - the more layers, the fluffier!

  • Fold the paper in half and push gently into the bag

  • Tuck the plush toy within the layers so it’s mostly hidden

  • Fluff the tissue paper around the toy to conceal the surprise

  • Add a ribbon around the handles for an extra level of flair

Option 2: Furoshiki wrapping

Furoshiki is the Japanese art of wrapping gifts in fabric. It’s a brilliant way to wrap soft toys, and the result always looks impressive.

  • Lay a large square of thin fabric flat on a stable surface

  • Place the plush toy in the middle of the square

  • Bring two opposite corners up and tie them over the top of the toy, without pulling too hard

  • Bring the other two corners up and tie a knot or bow so the toy sits securely inside the fabric bundle

Option 3: Wrapping paper

Standard wrapping paper can also be used to wrap a plush toy, but not in the standard way you may be thinking.

  • Wrap a long length of wrapping paper around the soft toy

  • Tape the bottom to create a stable base

  • Carefully gather the top of the paper loosely around the toy and tie it with a ribbon, creating a bouquet shape

  • Curl the ribbon ends to perfect the finish look

Option 4: A drawstring bag

A cotton drawstring bag may not look the most elegant, but it’s a practical and reusable solution.

  • Choose a drawstring bag that is reasonably larger than the plush toy

  • Line the bag with tissue paper for added flair

  • Pull the bag closed and secure it with a ribbon for the child to open

Option 5: A doll carrier, stroller or crib

If you don’t want to wrap the plush toy, staging it with an accessory can help encourage open-ended playtime.

  • Depending on the toy, choose an appropriately-sized carrier, stroller or crib

  • Leave the toy in their bedroom or playroom and guide them to find it

  • Sit back and watch how their imagination comes to life!
